Project Engineer – Capital Projects

Role Overview

The Project Engineer will be part of a team responsible for the delivery of significant capital projects across complex infrastructure and operational environments. The role focuses on managing projects from initial concept through design, construction, commissioning, and handover, ensuring efficient, high-quality delivery aligned with programme and budget objectives.

This position plays a key role in driving project execution, coordination, and performance across multiple stakeholders, with a strong emphasis on delivering large-scale capital works safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Lead and manage capital projects from concept through to completion, including design development, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover

  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to defined quality standards

  • Act as the central coordination point between design teams, contractors, and stakeholders

  • Manage multiple projects and interfaces concurrently across complex environments

Planning & Programme Management

  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets

  • Coordinate project resources and ensure efficient allocation throughout the project lifecycle

  • Drive progress against milestones and proactively address delays or constraints

Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams, contractors, consultants, and key stakeholders

  • Facilitate clear communication and alignment across all project participants

  • Lead project meetings and provide regular updates on performance and key milestones

Risk & Issue Management

  • Identify project risks and develop practical mitigation strategies

  • Maintain and manage project risk registers and issue logs

  • Resolve technical and delivery challenges in a timely and effective manner

Construction Phase Management

  • Oversee project execution within live operational environments

  • Monitor site progress, coordinate contractors, and ensure works are delivered in line with project objectives

  • Drive performance on site to achieve programme, cost, and quality targets

Commercial & Contract Management

  • Support the preparation and management of contracts and tender processes

  • Administer contracts, manage variations, and support dispute resolution where required

  • Track project costs, manage budgets, and report on financial performance

Project Close-Out

  • Manage commissioning, handover, and project close-out activities

  • Agree final accounts and ensure completion of all documentation

  • Capture lessons learned to support continuous improvement

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree (Level 8 or higher) in Civil Engineering, Project Management, or related discipline

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in capital project delivery, construction, or infrastructure development

  • Proven experience managing projects from concept through to completion

  • Experience working in complex or live operational environments

  • Strong project management, organisational, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities

  • Ability to make informed decisions and drive project outcomes

  • Full driving licence

Desirable

  • Experience delivering large-scale infrastructure

  • Chartered status or professional membership (e.g. Engineers Ireland or equivalent)

  • Familiarity with industry-standard contract forms (e.g. NEC, FIDIC)

  • Experience with project planning tools (e.g. Microsoft Project) and design software (e.g. AutoCAD)

  • Exposure to sustainability or energy-related capital projects

  • Experience in public sector or regulated procurement environments
